Milagros, or tiny miracles, are small religious charms that have been used in Mexico and other areas of Latin America for hundreds of years to petition saints for guidance, help and protection. Milagros are made in many different symbolic forms, from eyes, legs and arms to angels and animals. These religious charms are pinned to altars and statues of saints, the Virgin Mary and Jesus in churches throughout Latin America as prayer reminders or to thank the saint for prayers answered. Mexican miracle charms or “milagros” are used to call blessings upon yourself or a loved one.
Handmade in Mexico, they were traditionally placed at the altars of Mexico’s many saints to request miracles, from safe travels, to prosperity, to health. Now these little charms serve the same purpose, whether hung from a bracelet, used in a crafting project, or given as a gift!
